I agree with Scholes. They need someone in the midfield who can control and play balls. It's not about 11 players running heedlessly. Look back at Real when they won three consecutive champions league. While Casemiro was shielding the defence and Modric and Kroos were controlling the midfield. I personally think both Modric and Kroos aren't effective in tackling and pressing. That team were vulnerable. But they focused on the player's strength. Everyone was playing their part.

Utd. don't have that ball controlling player in the midfield except "world class on his day" Pogba. And Pogba's decision making and understanding of the game can best be described as atrocious. While Pogba can control the midfield, he has at least one catastrophic mistake per game in him. Too many defensive passengers Utd. is carrying.

Scholes speaks 100% facts carrick needs to take just as much blame as Ole and he needs to go.

When Lampard was sacked, Chelsea looked awful defensively n couldnt keep a clean sheet but since Tuchel, they are europes clean sheet specialists. Man Utd have a great squad, they need a great manager/coach to take them to the next level.

@@Docdoherty13 chelsea did have better defenders but fact is under lampard we consided so many goals. He benched rudiger, christensen, alson, azpi, jorginho. When tuchel came he put all of them right back in. He saw things lampard couldnt see. Might be a worldclass manager will improve the manchester united squad players to the next lvl. I

I actually agree with all of them at the same time. Theres definetly a lack of feeling of responsibility on the players side. Especially in the defense they don't seem concentrated and passionate enough. Ole would have needed to prep them up mentally by being a little bit harsher to them. See mourinho, tuchel, klopp, zidane. Also the gameplan seems off many times. Midfields unsure of how to start a proper attack when bruno isn't primarily involved. Definetly lots of quality in the squad its just missing some fine tuning, edge ans maybe 2 transfers

Used to have a midfielder called Ander Herrera, walked out the door for free, didnt replace him. Why not? Because we had to fill another position instead, and that's the issue. Theres always another area that needs work. The lack of long term planning means that we are perpetually one step away.

Tbf they both made good points. Scholes is arguing more for a Man City type case. Great midfielders on the ball i.e KDB, Silva, Gundogan (or even a player like himself actually) who dictate play and can pick out passes. Rio is making a case for more of the liverpool style. Henderson, Milner, Fabinho, formerly Wijnaldum are all not great midfield controllers. But their system is so well structured that those guys simply break up play and transition quickly to the forwards or fullbacks who do most of the creative work. Works perfectly for them. So either system could work. All depends on the coach, what he wants to play, and the players available to him. Ole obviously had no idea what he wanted.

Hargreaves spot on as usual. The biggest challenge the incoming manager has is to get the players working hard and earning the right to play.

As is, this current United team seems good enough to compete, but there are clear weaknesses in midfield & defense. Perhaps a top manager could possibly develop & improve the players we have, & so yes, there's enough in there to work with.

Honestly think a world class manager would make Man Utd title contenders tbh. Guardiola won the league with Delph at Lb, Tuchel the CL with Werner up front, Klopp with a not so very big squad. Ideally a few signings would help but I honestly think a top coach with good tactical ability can mask squad weaknesses.

Bring In a proper manager who can improve AWB going forward just by giving him a couple of triggers of when to cross and how to make runs , bring in a CDM and work with the players that are there . Get results now and replace the aging players as they leave but this whole rebuild again is a bad idea

United got too many headline players, they need players that are going to support the big stars around them through assist making, pressing and applying pressure. Thats the issue with the team at the moment. They need the Scholes, Giggs, Carrick, Valencia, Young, Park, Evra type players to return to the club. All these players went under the radar but thats where MUFC success came from all part of a successful team, because they seen the bigger picture of playing as a team. It was reliased after they've left and people have stood back and looked at stats.

As a Liverpool fan, the Man Utd squad have too many primadonnas. Players like Maguire, Fred, Martial etc are not good enough. It is not all about being star players. Man Utd had unsung heroes like Ji-Sung Park. Chelsea had Makelele (during Mourinho's 1st spell) and even Liverpool have unknowns like Robbo, Chelsea have Kante and City have the likes of Fernandinho who are hard workers. So the key is getting the balance right and not always getting stars and try to make them fit in as a team.

Listen, when I look at the Glazers they build the team like that of American basketball - get the All-Star players and since they have their individual qualities the chemistry would surely come but what they don’t know is unlike basketball, the chemistry has to be there in football before the quality of individuals come through unless of course the person is an alien (CR7 and Messi)

Paul Scholes is comparing the midfield too himself, Paul is 1 in a 100 million such as Xavi, Iniesta.. players like these are very rare, Paul’s expectations and demands of this Utd team are different to anyone else’s, I get that Paul demands excellence but this Utd team needs a plan in order to grow into a actual ‘team’ instead of solely relying on individuals.

I think they way football were when scholes were coming up is different than football now. When scholes were coming up, SAF gave trust to the players to work out amongst them selves in a game. SAf just gave the formation and who plays, and the players try to beat the opponent's using their own creativity. They have more freedom. Only when the players couldnt find a way, SAF gave small details here and there how to beat the opponents. Football today very different. Managers micro manage players, how to play, where to be on the pitch, on and off possession. Players have less freedom. They rely less on their own creativity and rely more and more on the coaches tactic and instructions.

Scholes is probably the most underated player of the Premier League era; but he's not saying they need an Iniesta or Xavi. Carrick controlled the pitch when he played. He wasn't world class but he could do it. Fred, Pogba, McTominay can't. Matic can't any more.

Scholes is right though - there's a reason why Pep continued playing Fernandinho when he arguably had more technical players on the bench. He offered that control and broke up play when it needed to, can't really see any UTD midfielder being of the same caliber, or of the likes of Fabinho, Kante etc etc

Olè had the worst run of games to have his job at stake. Playing the other top 6 teams with 2 CL games & Watford in that mix of 8 games. Beating Spurs was best thing for Spurs, and despite reports Man United didn’t want him initially, what would they have done had he still been available after Watford game. What if those games were stretched out, and each loss was sandwiched by wins & draws against the rest of league. He was making progress last year and had something going this year. I’m not in any way blaming Ronaldo, but they definitely didn’t plan on him until all the sudden City were about to sign him. Yes he has shined like always, but others are not playing games like they planned to do going into season. Olè is good guy and does know how to coach. Hope he finds the right club to do that, and has success

No one loses 0-5 to Liverpool at Home with a full attendance (+ away fans also supporting ole 😂). This was only going to get worse and worse. Its is a known fact that Ole doesn't know how to coach at the highest level. I used to think Ole was good guy too, VDB and Sancho incidents seem to say otherwise. Ole is a liar and a puppet. Jose got 81 points with a subpar squad, and that was what Ole inherited, Ole did not improve upon it, and only got 74 points at his best, that too with Bruno, Maguire, AWB, Cavani and others.

We need more players I agree with him on that..

Utd have great individuals.. They lack a quality CDM though someone like a kante/fernandinio.. Also a RB as wan-bissaka just don't cut it..

They can bring whoever they want as manager but until that midfield is sorted they will get nowhere. Pogba, Matic, Fred and McTominay are all substandard midfielders while the jury is out on Van de Beek given he has barely featured. Hopefully he will get more games between the end of the season so we can see if he's a long term viable option but ultimately Pogba and Matic need to be replaced and an excellent CDM and box to box midfielder to come in- ideally it would be Bellingham and Laimer but not going to be cheap. The rest of the first 11 is fine, could probably do with more strength in depth at RB and CB.

The notion that Man Utd squad depth is anywhere near Chelsea is delusional to say the least. They dont even have a couple of good midfielders on the pitch not to mention the squad. Maguire has become a laughing stock. Question marks over Lindelof and Van Bissaka. No decent cover if first team defenders get injured, I could go on. Chelsea have 2-3 quality players for every position.

Need a steady clever composed midfielder who also works off the ball. They also need two consistent fullbacks.

Erik Ten Hag manager, Muelenstein assistant and Van Der Sar as Sporting Director. There's a clear philosophy with these 3 working together and 2 of them have a very close link with United. All 3 are competent and would significantly improve the sporting side

@Tahmid Ahmed he wouldn't accept the role as assistant. Ralf has a philosophy that would help transitioning teams over a shorter period. He'd be a good shout as interim but I'd doubt he'd accept an interim role

Totally agree with Scholes at the same time with Rio. They need someone strong in midfield to create chances and pass up to the strikers. At the same they need chemistry with the players and a system where all the players understands each other. Players who runs up before it’s pass to them, like how rashford always does. Pogba martial Lingard Rashford use to play so well together for a season with all those clever passes. Maguire needs to realise that he’s always in no man’s land. And start sticking close and defend the opponent rather than defending the Air and stop pointing to his defenders to do the job. Then we should be good to go.

Controlling the pitch doesn't allways come down tp just being technical though. A smart person with average skill will be better at controlling the midfield any day that a highly technical player who isn't very clever.

@Tahmid Ahmed Modric and Xavi are two of the most technical midfielders of their era. When footballers talk about technical ability they mean touch, weight of pass, spatial awareness, vision they don't mean fancy dribbling.

They seem to forget that SAF was able to win the League with Ashley Cole and Phil Jones as starters. Not always the players, but the coach does influence a lot

Scholes has always been a committed Chelsea hater but that's actually great coz Chelsea are used to always being an underdog. Plus that's completely braindead thing to say just after we smashed Juventus and will smash his precious United in a couple of days

The thing is that Liverpool and City just tore Utd apart and that's why are they are being used to showcase how awful Utd are. Chelsea is as good as those two teams, Chelsea will be in discussion when they tear Utd apart as well, which should happen this weekend.

This united manager is not coming to a club settled like Tuchel was. The owner the board everything higher up is a MESS at United, when Tuchel came in he had a great squad just not performing to what they could do, United fans think they can also now get a manager in and win the UCL. It's going to take YEARS to change United's mentality

A 433 was the best set up for Manu... pogba lCM, Bruno Rcm.. and Scott or Fred cdm.. when Ole was interm, pogba LCM, matic CDM and Herrera RCM.. the best football we played.

I have watched games were Fred and McTominay in midfield could not pass the ball forward in the first thirty minutes of the game and they would constantly pass the ball back to the defence and then give the ball away again. Is that down to coaching or down to the players on the field?

No it is a gift. They get to buy in some of the worlds best players yet cannot even get the team to play basic good quality football. People are not even talking about Utd winning the league just playing good quality football for a start.

Paul is right, It's not only about setup, it's also the profile of the players.. Bruno and Paul and these guys are 'runners' relative to the kind of players City, Chelsea and Liverpool have who are very technical in terms keeping the ball... Rodrigo, Fabinho, Jorginho.. Compared to McFred Walker, Trent, James.. Compared to AWB Cancelo, Robbo, Chilwell..compared to Shaw Matip, Laporte, Rudiger..compared to Lindelof

Man U recruitment team is clueless. Why didn't we swap Lingard for Declan Rice. West ham wants Lingard, and we want Declan. Pay the extra on top and we got a solid cm/cdm who can make this team compete with Liverpool and City. SIMPLE!

Not for me no, I never felt they'd win it this season, even if we had a top manager I still think we'd fall short. We aren't far off but our midfield needs an overhaul & we could probably do with a new CB & RB. With a top manager though I think we are one window away with a decent spent from being serious competitors.

The bench players aren't quality and that will hurt in the long run even if a proper system is in place.

No Team has ever won multiple trophies without having at least one Top class controlling central midfield player... Kante, Jorginho, Fabinho, F'dinho, gundogan, Rodri... These players glue everything together.

I wanna to see Paul Scholes as a United manager one day he is Soo technically wise and brilliant.

Honestly, Hargreaves is the only one that speaks sense. No one gives him credit. Scholes speaking honestly unlike Neville.

I'm a Spurs fan and a Poch lover but he simply cannot deal with players with huge egos like Pogba and Ronaldo. He has one tactic: press. Good luck getting them to do that. I personally don't think it's a good fit or will work out but he's the best there is so can't argue with the logic.

Someone in midfield...who can take Charge....and midfield player is a right person to be Captain...which can control the front players and the back players... We need order in the field... running everywhere is not going to work....we need a system which all are compulsory to follow...

rio is correct. structure of the team, setup, strategy moving forward is crucial. utd lacked this fr years.
